This week I decided to finally read a book that came out this year. As much as I go on Goodreads and try to stay updated with what’s new and upcoming but when it comes to reading I prefer to read what I feel like reading. I think that’s a great tip for those interested in blogging about books is to read what you want to read and not just read something just because it came out. Plus following every new book I drive myself nuts and I would miss out on an old classics that I never gave a chance. This week I decided to read a new book because it’s writing by one of my favorite authors Neal Shusterman. The book that I have finished is called Challenger Deep. This is a book I reserved like months ago and was on a lengthy waiting list. So on to the book review.
Synopsis
The book Challenger Deep is a book about a boy named Caden who has two lives. On the one part of the book focuses on his real life self and the other Caden’s life is in an imaginary world. SO this is a book with Caden in two stories running through out. Anyway the real life Caden starts off as a weird kid who pretends to be an on a track team so he can go for walks without his parent’s knowledge, he paces a lot and gets lost in his head. Overtime in the book his parents find him acting weird and get to the point that needs to check in a mental clinic. In Caden’s imaginary world he is sailing on a ship with pirates where he and the captain and his parrot on a journey to a place called Challenger Deep in search of treasure and adventure. Throughout the book, both Caden’s lives go on a journey that shares a connection with characters, scenarios, and Caden’s mind.
Review:
Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman gives me a mixture of feelings. On the one hand, where I enjoyed it there were some characters that made me mad like his parents and those around him that see him as unstable. I also thought the book showed me the point of view of someone dealing with a mental illness and what it’s like for those dealing with it and those around him. The book also has some light moments and heavy moments. This book reminds a little of It’s a Funny Kind of Story by Ned Vizzini and a little of Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen with imaginary parts. Which are two of my favorite movies?
For those that want some that are powerful, imaginative but also somewhat different from your usual books I do recommend this book. Plus, it is from one of my favorite authors so why not give it a try. So until next time keep on reading.
