I was happy to finally pick up this fine book ready for this week’s Read-A-Thon and was the first I finished. The book I refer to is called The Book Thief. This is a book that I been wanting to read since every time I watch a book tuber’s video and everywhere I go everyone is talking about this book and of course the movie. But this review is purely about the book my movie review will come much later. So stay tuned for that. In the mean I’ll let you know more about the book.
The Book Thief is a book written by Markus Zusak who is an Australian writer. This book is set in Nazi Germany and centers around a girl named Liesel, who goes to live with her foster parents in Munich. Liesel also while living with her foster home she gets taught how to read by her foster father. Alongside Liesel also befriends a boy named Rudy who becomes her best friend and then she starts stealing books. She also falls in love with words. Later on in the book, her foster parents bring a mysterious friend who needs their help. And he is in fact a Jew named Max so you know how that goes. So because of this the Liesel is sworn to secrecy and soon becomes his friend as well. This friendship becomes strong and Liesel learns a lot about words and life.
I love this book and even though I had to wait a long time to read it I was happy to finally grab it and read it all day. I also love the fact that The Book Thief had a relationship with books and since I love books it works. I also think the main character’s love of books is somewhat relatable to anyone who loves to read. The one thing that was different from most of the books I read was the way it was written especially the narrator because mostly my readings never have a narrator with a voice. And this narrative is war. The war in the book that takes place which is narrator. I also like that he has personality and can suck you in its storytelling. I also need to discuss the characters especially when you read this book you find yourself laughing at the things the characters do.
What I didn’t like was maybe the narrator when he bounces around sometimes to scenes or what will happen. He tend to be a bit of a spoiler. When you read the book you’ll know what I mean. I also didn’t like the idea of the book being hard to put down. It was too interesting and I wish I had the rest of the day to read.
My final thought is to read the book if you love books. The book is beautiful the its written and the characters are fascinating and you don’t get offended easily. But I warn you there are parts where you might need some tissues. So check out the book and as always keep on reading.
