I have been meaning to pick up a book by Marie Lu but always postponed it. You know how it is…you keep saying “Oh I will read it. Eventually” but then months go before you touch it. So, recently I went to the National Book Festival in D.C. and then got to see Marie Lu speak. She talked about her writing and her books. Marie Lu also talked about her latest book Warcross and this peeked my interest so much I knew I had to pick this one up when it comes out. This is sci-fi thriller is great for anyone interested in gaming and wanted to read a book that involves in that world.
The world of Warcross takes place in the future where there is this new high tech popular game called Warcross. And this game takes you into the world of Virtual Reality. In fact, all you need is goggles and you can play the game. And in this game people battle each other into teams and win fame, prizes, and bragging rights. So in this book, we focus our attention on a bounty hunter named Emika Chen. Emika makes a living getting hired to hunt down criminals who use Warcross to commit a crime like gambling and so on. Despite this, Emika struggles to keep up with the climbing debt so in desperation she decides to hack into Warcross game in hopes to make money.
Things take a turn when Emika gets caught hacking the game but things get stranger when she gets a call from the main CEO of Warcross. Next thing you know she is hired to go undercover as a player in order to find the mysterious hacker Zero who is planning to do something malicious in the game. Will Emika find a way to stop Zero before his plan happens?
This book is amazing. It takes you into high stakes world Warcross. Marie Lu creates this world and makes you feel like you are in it and want to try out this game. I enjoyed the gaming sequences through where the character is playing the game. The book also takes into the dark world of technically and makes feel like I’m in another world. This book also is fast-paced and will have you flipping the pages like crazy to see what is going to happen next. I also like the suspenseful feeling of not knowing what will happen next. This world of Warcross is so deadly.
As for the main character Emika Chen, I think she made this story. She has got to be one of my favorite female characters I read about this year. She is smart, a total bad ass that has a moment where she pulls the gutsy moves and I like how there are many layers to her. I see her grow as a character through the series and can’t wait to see her in the next book.
Overall, I was really amazed by the book and happy that I finally got to read a book by Marie Lu. And even though I might wait awhile till the next Warcross book to come out, I am still happy that there are other Marie Lu books that can keep me busy.
